Receiving Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age, Pastor Thorpe was baptized and became a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Manson, NC. In the early sixties, Pastor Thorpe united with the Christ Memorial Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In 1966, he moved his membership to the Second New St. Paul Baptist Church. While at Second New St. Paul, Pastor Thorpe was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was licensed in 1972 and later ordained into the Gospel Ministry in 1975. At Second New St. Paul, Pastor Thorpe served in many capacities: a deacon; the minister of the early morning service; and, he served on the Board of Directors for the Green Valley Senior Citizen's Apartments complex.
Pastor Thorpe received his theological training at the Washington Baptist Seminary in Washington, DC, graduating in June 1976. He went on to serve as assistant pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Nanjemoy, MD, under the leadership of the late Reverend William Leach. From there, Pastor Thorpe served as the pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church in King George, VA, for eight years. In 1989, he became the first, full-time pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Welcome, MD, where he has been serving faithfully for the past sixteen years.
Pastor Thorpe is an active member of the Missionary Baptist Ministers' Conference of Washington, DC; the Charles County Ministers' Conference of Charles County, MD; the Potomac River Baptist Association of DC & Vicinity; the Hampton University Minister's Conference of Hampton, VA; the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; and the Collective Banking Group, Inc. of Prince Georges County, MD.
